Life: Petersen Museum Japanese Cruise-In & Super Street Meet 2018 Part 2

We’re back with part II of of my Petersen Museum X Super Street Meet coverage! Please see here for my prior coverage.

DA Integra with Speed Star Racing by SSR EX-C aero covers…. try finding these nowadays.  I would hate to lose a center cap.

Dat JDM parking sensor.

A GTR with a bunch of overtake parts on it.  For those who don’t know Overtake is an in house brand by bulletproof automotive, some of their parts are made by companies such as Power House Amuse, makes sense since they are the official US Powerhouse Amuse distributor.

R33 GTR owned by Kinganytime of Hoonigan fame? Not sure if he’s a part of them anymore.

Red Cressida also featured on Hoonigan

Evo IX from DTM autobody rocking the full Voltex kit.

Love when other makes rock ASM parts.  This is very common in Japan since ASM is the Recaro dealer and outfits many of their seats into cars, i.e Porsche 911.

DanOften’s Ap1 with voltex bumper, spoon hood, and craftsquare mirrors.

Pretty serious seat setup.  Hopefully this car actually sees track time.

First gen civic with a Honda motorcycle engine.

Not sure what motorcycle this is from, I’m sure I would of found out if I read the paper above…

The wheels look like Watanabes, could be wrong…..

CHP rollin by making sure everyone is staying CARB legal.

Super Clean Civic VTi.  The  EG Civic VTi is kinda of like the SIR model but for the UK market, it comes with a B16a.  It doesn’t have the white SIR cluster, but does have red gauge needles, and a tach that goes to 8k and reads in miles.  No idea why I didn’t take more pictures but I thought it was pretty cool… Makes sense to import cars from the UK since cars are being exported from Japan at an alarming rate.

My friend Alvin was drooling over this AW11 MR2.

We decided to go downstairs into the Petersen museum since the meet was pretty small…. Out in the parking area they had this E30 M3 on display.

Inside the Petsersen Museum, out front and center, they had this Porsche 911 993 GT1 Race car on display.

Forshadowing the Porsche exhibit in the museum.

Amazing rear end, the exhaust setup looks insane.

I really like the overall shape of this car, it is very elegant.

They also had Iconic vintage Japanese sports cars out front as part of their Japanese car exhibit.  Super Rad Honda S800, grandfather to the almighty S2000.

A Subaru 360… kinda like a jdm volkswagen beetle knock off.  To the left of the Subaru is a Toyota Sports 800, which also rocks a boxer engine.  You could say this is the grandfather to the current GT86.

Finally some more S2k content, and a very historic one in fact.  Most people remember Suki’s VeilSide S2000 from 2 Fast 2 Furious….  Did you know she is Steve Aoki’s sister?  And their father is the founder of benihana….. now you knowwwwww.  I can’t remember the last time anyone mentioned ROJA wheels… throwback.

Interior is pretty standard, mostly reupholstered and the addition of gauges in the center.

The Time Machine Delorean from Back to The Future.

One of a kind Toyota 2000GT Convertible custom made for Sean Connery in the film You Only Live Twice because he was too tall….

I saw a few of these at the old Toyota Museum, which is long gone now.

Mazda FD RX7 prototype.

Mclaren 720S entirely made out of Legos.

Jaguar XJ220

Kenmeri Skyline

Famous Super Street ex-editor JDMWong’s EF Civic painted Suzuka Blue with a Rocket Bunny Kit…. funny how those two are not things I like in my book, but work soooo good here.

SSR SuperFins.

Close up shot of the superfins.

Incredibly rare Mugen Exhaust for the EF.

Dragcartel K series engine up on display.

With a mean looking header.

A Titan Motorsports Supra.  Titan motorsports is a shop famously known for tuning Supras.

Classic and new Ford GT.

Period looking Nissan Race car.  Reminds me of speed racer.

Amazing how minimalistic this car is.

Period correct zip ties holding everything together.

Mazda Cosmos.

Another Toyota 2000gt, this one more original.

Afterwards we went downstairs to check out the Porsche exhibit…. I don’t know my Porsches too well, so excuse my lack of knowledge.  This looks like a Porsche 911 930.

Yep, the 930 is a turbo…

I haven’t seen too many of these Porsche Carrera GTs in person up close.  This front bumper is where ASM found the inspiration for their bumper design.  You can see it right?

ASM may of found inspiration from the fenders too.

To my surprise, the interior looks very dated for a car of this prestige, typical early 2000s look…. You can’t see it, but something on the door card was coming apart on the passenger side.

Never a fan of tan interiors…

Porsche 911 Targa.

Porsche 356 speedster.

A more modern Porsche….

This car is the famous Rothmans Paris – Dakar Porsche 959.  I believe the dirt is original too… This must be worth a cool million dollars+.

Slantnose 911.

This car was double roped off, if that means anything.

I am going to end off this post with this Zenki 240sx on CP Hart-R wheels, I walked back into the show and took one shot and left….

Finds: Eagle Shop Urawa S2000

It’s one of those nights were I can’t sleep…..  Lately I’ve been transition from one industry to another, so I’m trying to find a job in a different field than what I’ve been working on for the past 6 years.  I need to get my mind off of it, when my mind wanders, sometimes I look back to the early days of the s2000, when many things were new, and Japan was a bit further away since we didn’t have sites like speedhunters, or bloggers like Noriyaro (like bringing dajiban knowledge to the mainstream….), or even countless countless youtube videos of people visiting famed S2000 tuning shops while on vacation in Japan now.  The world really feels like a smaller place, globalization is real.  Back when the S2000 was released and your only glimpse of JDM culture was through Best Motoring Videos you had to buy (cough cough) or though magazines like Option, or my favorite, HyperREV!

Eagle Shop Urawa is just a typical Japanese tuning shop based out of the Saitama prefecture, right outside Tokyo, they specializing in Hondas.  They don’t produce their own parts, and seem more into the setup for cars for people that enjoy track days, which is why I’m sure the Eagle Shop Urawa Spec Road & Track Ohlins Dampers are available.  Eagle Shop Urawa generally use parts from the typical JDM s2k tuners, like Mugen, Spoon, Powerhouse Amuse, Endless, Voltex, you know the good stuff.  What really stood out to me is when I saw their blurb in the first HyperRev magazine they were featured in, the super rad speedster style S2000 caught my eye. The chopped off the windshield, gives the car a super raw look, almost retro-esque of some German or British stuff. No one else had such a crazy S2k at the time, the execution was spot on…. it could of gone bad, like really bad.

EagleShopUrawa
I love how it’s a single seater, the passenger side is blocked off.  Rocking some Enkei RPF1s, Powerhouse Amuse R1 front Bumper, Mugen hood, Bride racing Bucket seat, custom looking side skirts and APR mirrors

EagleShopUrawa2
The car attacking the track with a big ass voltex wing….

EagleShopUrawa3
The car is insane. The exhaust looks like an Amuse r1 Exhaust and the front bumpers it looks like they added some canards.  This car is really built for the track!

That’s it….. I know these pictures have been floating around the net for awhile now.  But I really wanted to spotlight one of my favorite JDM S2k builds.  If you have any more pictures of this car, please send them my way! I would definitely enjoy it.

Parts Review: ASM Front Tower Bar

I’ve recently been unloading a bunch of my S2000 parts to clear out some garage space…..
I wanted to show off the ASM front strut bar….. it’s currently on the market to be sold, it’s on facebook and under the SoCal section on S2ki right now if you are interested.

For the non-enthusiast this is just an overpriced piece of metal.  All of the cheaper options such as the NRG, Megan Racing, etc are much much cheaper.  But they are all replications of this bar.  Each ASM front tower bar is made from one guy in Japan at Succeed Sports.  Read more about it here

When I got the bar, I was surprised how light the bar is and how solid it feels, it really feels like one piece of pipe.  Unfortunately I think this will get in the way of my Toda ITBs, oooppss did I say that?  My car is still in pieces so yeah….  hopefully s2k parts will still be affordable when I can put my car back together.

ASM front strut Bar
It’s the same concept as some expensive watches that are all made by one man that took years to learn his craft.  If this was a Porsche part it would be triple the price I bet!

ASM front strut Bar-3The welds are perfect, it’s amazing that this is done all by hand. You don’t get this with your Megan Racing knockoff! Those Chinese kids can’t come close.

ASM front strut Bar-2
As quoted from Gotuning, “They’re not simply color treated for show. The entire manufacturing process of each bar takes 4 hours so only 2 can be produced per day. Many ASM GT series bars hold design patents to protect their innovative designs.”

ASM front strut Bar-4
I’m a proud owner of this part, I hope it will go on to a good home in the near future. I wish I could tell you how this feels on a car….

Life: The Chronicles Year 8

Hey all,

I’m finally finishing catching up the events I went to a few months ago.  This should be the last of the posts for now…..I wanted to go to the Chronicles Year 8 meet for awhile now.  Reading about them on Joey’s blog when I was living on the East coast, it always painted me a good picture of the SoCal car scene.  I knew I couldn’t miss out this year, it helps to have car friends to go with too.

This meet just so happens to be when I was in the process of moving to my new place.  I had a bunch of stuff to move and only a few days to do it….. My wife was exciting to hear I was going to a car meet instead 🙂

I met up with a few friends in Pasadena before heading out to year 8.  Chilling in front of the infamous rival machine.

Gabe’s car just came out of the paint a few days prior…. The car is looking minty fresh with the battlecraft hood.

Joe was ready to lead the way.  Those MF10s are looking dangerously close to the curb in this picture… You can remember Joe’s car from this post

Following Joe to the meet.

October 29, 2016-DSC02358
My buddy Alvin snapped some shots on the road…..Endless brakes look so good with the Bronze Mugen MF10 rims.

Mugen hood, CR lip, works surprisingly well.

Some shots of the Rival Machine.

Alvin took a shot of me in traffic…..

October 29, 2016-DSC02373
We’re almost there…..

Of course, this being S2kandTheAnt….I met up with Areen and Chris….. they don’t need any introductions.

interesting pinstriping on the Enkei NT03 on the Rival Machine

626 Squad.

another angle of the 626 squad.

Spoon’s newly converted center-drive FD2 Honda Civic Type R was in attendance.  I even got to sit in it! In another life, this used to be 5Zigen’s FD2R in Japan.

S2k squad represent.

It was a hot hot hot day, I think it was close to 100 degrees this day, the crazy heat forced me to buy a spoon umbrella……yeah forced……

I thought these 24k gold engine bays have gone out of style, but it looks like it is still around.

Can’t get enough of this lineup…..

Cool styled NSX.

I loved this mugen kited DC2 Type R.

the Bronze Mugen MF10 looks great against the white.

The same Spoon Civic EG that was in my Spoon sports post.  Clean as always, rocking almost the catalog of spoon parts, but that damn Mishimoto radiator always gets me!  Link for the owner if he ever reads this.

I haven’t seen this in years, an Ap1 veilside lip.

Another picture of the S2000 Veilside lip.

This Mugen themed FD2 converted Civic looked great.

the only Evo ix at the show and it was a great example of one.

Rare Mugen FA5.  True story, I remember going to a dealership in 2009 and the salesman tried to sell me this car instead of the 2009 s2k I was looking at, he was working really hard at it, these cars must have been a hard sale at the time, no real power improvements that make a car cost $6k more….but now in hindsight, it might of been a good decision….

CDM as in Canadian Domestic Market Acura CSX…. with a supercharger and Itasha livery.

PY Integra Type R.

Hector Lavario‘s Voltex Theme S2k was looking good!

Either this in an imported car or a very authentic representation of an early D1 drift car.  I love the look, very nostalgic.

Chris popped his hood, and I couldn’t help  but to snap a picture.  Mugen intakes are my favorite…..

behind me was this swan-necked Suzuka blue s2k.

Rocking Voltex Styled Aero!  Overall this was well executed.  The red car next to this car was actually K swapped using Hasport mounts…. Update 4-10-2017….. this car was on a Smoking Tire One Take

A few Porches were in attendance.

ASM styled car with M racing mirrors.

And this closes it, from the garage, back to the garage…

Life: Super Street X Toyo Tires Calendar Launch Meet (Part 1)

Last month I checked out the Super Street X Toyo Tires Calendar launch in Costa Mesa. It took place at Boden AutoHaus so they were plenty of stance cars on air there. I’m usually not a big fan of stance, regardless I wanted to check it out. They were some quality builds there I’ve only seen online prior. Sorry for lack of polarizer… the pictures are too damn reflective….

DSC08599

First thing I saw was this Art car inspired Porsche 911

DSC08603

Costa Mesa Police was there to keep things in order

DSC08605

They were some S2000s there like this s2k running “Spoon inspired” body parts, like the top, bumper, fenders…. The quarter panels look legit though…. Sometimes I wonder if you spend this much on Shine goods, it’s not that much more for legit bumpers.

DSC08608

DSC08610

I’ve seen this LTMW Audi R8 all over the interwebs. I must admit it looks better in person.

DSC08714-2

This car is what’s wrong with the scene today. All people want to do is build their car for the most attention as fast as possible with no thought put into it…… No attention to detail, no saving up for quality authentic parts, none of that.

Life: Winter Drive: Automotive Gathering + Toy Drive

This past Saturday morning I decided to check out the Winter Drive: Auto gathering at Santa Anita Park. Winter Drive is a car meet and Toy drive for kids this Christmas and Santa Anita Park is actually home to a Horse Racing track, the Venue is huge and can accommodate a tremendous amount of cars. Luckily for me, Santa Anita park is only a 15min drive from my place. The event starts at 10am, I got there around 11ish. The rule with these car shows is that you should show up early, like when the cars roll in. Usually the best cars show up around that time. As I was coming in, I saw a Ferrari Laferrari leaving the show…. I’ve seen like 3 of these things this year….Only in California I swear.

I left around 10. I met up with my friend and his Audi TT… I mean R8 and we rolled to the show together. It was in the mid 70s all afternoon, it felt like summer in Boston haha.

20151205_183647840_iOS

Sometimes I never know what to take pictures of at this car shows, I’m just overwhelmed by the shear number of quality cars there, I instantly become jaded….

DSC07106

My first time seeing RWB cars in real life. They are….. Exactly what they look like online. I remember looking at Noriyaro.com years ago and seeing Stella Artois for the first time and being blown away, the rawness of the car, how wide it was, just seemed so cool. Now they seem a bit sedate and bit a cookie cutter….I still think Stella Artois is damn cool.

DSC07111

Not every day you see a Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, especially at at car show. Crazy Crazy expensive…. I think <$3 Mil? The transporter is just as cool as the car.

DSC07140

Definitely a homologation special.

DSC07134

All smiles around this car

DSC07117

The Mclaren Merecedes SLR is another one of my favorites, even though Paris Hilton drove it for a bit….. I think I have a soft spot for the Silver Arrow….. It would look better without this kit.

DSC07120

I like this “couchbuilt” BMW Z4 by Bulletproof automotive. The diamond stitching on the door panel is perfect. The wood shiftknob is a nice touch. Google the car if you want to see the exterior!

DSC07133

Out of all these high dollar cars, there was a small gathering around this Pagani Huayra. It was my first time seeing this in person and it does look magnificent.

DSC07143

There were a few Porsche 918 in attendance.

DSC07145

But I was drawn to this R34 GTR more. It was done up pretty nice, with TE37 and Stoptech calipers. It’s funny to think in Japan, an R34 GTR would probably not be in the same crew with a Porsche 918, but in the due to the rarity they can roll haha.

Here’s the same car racing a 918…..

DSC07149

E46 M3 with the airbox removed and trumpets added.

DSC07152

Magnus Walker and his crew showed up….

DSC07156

I never thought I would see Magnus Walker in person, but here he is….

DSC07163

He was with this White RWB Porsche

DSC07175

The Diversity at this show was great.

DSC07173

This Lexus LFA was looking mighty tasty.

DSC07170

I like how the Side Markers bulged out.

DSC07167

They seem very aerodynamic

DSC07165

They were a few R32 GTR Skylines in attendance. We’re going to see a lot more of these as time goes on.

DSC07177

Of course the Granddaddy of all Skylines was there, the Hakosuka…..

I met up with a few s2000 friends and we went to Santa Anita Mall to grab a few bites…..

Shout out to Areen for taking this photo. He has a very spooned out S2k if you guys are curious……

Stay tuned. I have my first track day next post!

Life: Early December Meet

Another week gone by, another meet to attend.

A few interesting cars showed up….. A Porsche Cayman Gt4 and a Porsche 996 911 Turbo. Dunno if it’s because I’m an S2k Otaku, but does the Porsche Cayman GT4 Wing look like an S2000 Mugen wing? I believe the owner picked up the 996 911 Turbo for a good price while the Porsche market on the 996 was relatively slow. Turbo Porsches are awesome in any shape or form to me, even the un-loved 996 gen.

DSC07097

Chris Lum showed up in his FAMOUS Mugen’d out S2k check out the build thread here I took a in depth look at his Mugen intake. The quality is insane, I used to have a password JDM intake back in the day and this one definitely blows it out of the water. Even comparing this intake to the J’s racing intake, you can just tell the Mugen intake is much better built. It’s what I would expect from a company that used to manufacture f1 Quality parts! I looked closer at his ASM Cooling Plate, which is definitely a Cusco plate that ASM must of contracted them to build. It looks pretty identical to my Cusco cooling plate. If I ever get a Mugen intake in the future, I will probably use an ASM cooling plate as a template and cut my Cusco Cooling Plate.
DSC07100

I looked closer at his Mugen Bonnet, it felt extremely lightweight, much lighter than my FRP ASM Bonnet. You can just tell this is a quality autoclaved carbon masterpiece, the weave looks perfect. Lifting the Mugen Bonnet, he is running Science of speed hood dampers, the build of dampers are very robust. The dampers feature thick stainless steel plates with steel ball studs used to mount the aluminum rods. I wish I took pictures of this, but comparing the SOS units to the TEIN or GREDDY units, you can tell Science of Speed did all their homework….
DSC07102

My first real track day is on this upcoming Sunday. Wish me luck guys!
