Finds: 2018 TAS Spoon S2k for Auction!

Hi all,

Long time no post… It is 2018 and I’m still unemployed, so things are a bit slow for the s2k on my end! Don’t worry me and the S2k are in this till the end! I still gotta post up a picture of what I have left of the S2k….. In other news, my daughter was born this year, oh yeah! I don’t like to post too much non-original content, but I gotta archive this for the future. Links to stuff like this tend to die out.  If you like this non-original content, I do love posting S2k news….

This year during Tokyo Auto Salon, TAS for short, in parallel with the normal TAS activities, a car auction was held. Many classic JDM cars were presented and sold, such as a Mint Low mileage R34 GTR Nur, or the Spoon NSX, that Ichishima san famously crashed at the Macau street Circuit! But this is S2kandtheAnt! Even though I seem to feature non-S2k material from time to time, my priority is on this 2 door convertible with a 9k redline (sometimes 8200) that we all know and love!

At this years TAS, the Spoon Sports S2000 Racecar was auctioned off. Spoiler Alert, the car did not sell, it did not met the reserved set….. They did however release some juicy images of the spoon racecar. All these people building spoon tribute cars, nothing beats the real deal, nothing! This is a real treat, because it’s damn rare to see up close and super detailed photos of the car. For some reason most JDM tuners tend not to post pictures of their car like this.

SPOON_S2000_19
Vin # of the racecar shell.  Looks like it’s an Ap1, 130 model.  This is the 2003 year of the S2k in Japan, which is pretty much like a USDM AP2 minus the f22c engine.   With that being said, the designation of Ap2 vs Ap1 in Japan is only relevant with the later years that have a f22c and dbw, kind of like our 06+.

SPOON_S2000_17
This car was raced in the ST4 class of Super Taikyu (Super Endurance).  The rules for the class is basically showroom stock powered cars with minimal mods.  The engine bay of the car looks relatively stock with a few bit of spoon dress up items, brake sock, valve cover, radiator hose, radiator, snorkel duck thing.  The engine in this car is blue printed and built from spoon.  I believe spoon uses OEM parts when they rebuild their engines, but choose parts that are closer in weight to achieve total balance.  All of this is controlled by a Motec ECU.

SPOON_S2000_14
Interior is all racing business, spoon bucket, cool suit, and what’s a JDM car without Takata harnesses.

Side profile showing off the Spoon S2000 widebody kit, but not really wide body kit because it is not running spoon fenders or rear over fenders!

SPOON_S2000_04
Dunno if it’s just me, but this version 2 kit only works on full liveried out racecars, when it’s on a car with a single color, it looks a bit odd.

Peaking under the Advan TCIII? rims you can see the signature Spoon Calipers.  These particular calipers might be a special prototype or the 355 version.  The picture is not clear enough to identify.

Maybe not now, but in the future this will be worth something to a generation of enthusiasts.

PickUps/Parts Review: TODA RACING 60-70MM CATALYST ADAPTER (TestPipe)

I got some parts reviews I’ve been meaning to put up…. Since I have an ASM 70mm Titanium exhaust (Which I believe is the best S2k exhaust ever, much better than the SS version, the sound is so crisp!), I’ve always ran it with an invidia 70mm testpipe which is 70mm straight through, for what that is, the Invidia unit is a great value for what it is and fitment is spot on. This Toda Racing 60-70MM CATALYST ADAPTER, makes perfect sense to me, smooth transitions should mean higher exhaust velocities right?  I’m not an engineer, but it makes me feel better because it says Toda racing and has a sticker for RACING USE ONLY

Toda Test Pipe-2I’m a huge fan of Toda Racing.  It seems like every Honda shop uses their products to build their engines, including the world famous KTECH….. and they run engines in Super GT…. How cool is that!

Toda Test Pipe
Of course another shoutout to RHDJapan some of the beautiful benefits of globalization….

Toda Test Pipe-12I love how this comes with an OEM Quality Gasket.

Toda Test Pipe-13Bolted on the car….

Toda Test Pipe-14Mated with the ASM 70 MM Titanium Exhaust……

Toda Test Pipe-15
The only thing that would complete this would be an ASM or Toda Exhaust Manifold….. If only…..

Toda Test Pipe-16

After installing this on the car, the car was noticeably quieter on pulls.  I would assume this is because the air is moving faster now since it has a smoother transition, while before it was a 60mm exit on the header dumped directly into 70mm test pipe.  Honestly the car felt the same powerwise.

Life: S2k Cruise in San Diego

Just because I don’t “have” an S2000 does not mean this is not S2kandTheAnt…. I lent my camera to my friend Alvin to take some pictures of an S2k cruise a few Sundays ago. The cruise was through the very scenic mountains in the San Diego area. For those not from LA, San Diego is about an 1hr+ away from where we live, sometimes longer because, you know…..LA traffic. It’s a real thing, trust me. He snapped a bunch of pictures…. of rad cars in attendance.

03-26-2017_Cruise-2Not only were S2ks on the trip, but a few NSXs decided to swing by….

This NSX looked really fresh…interesting bling bling wheels.

Clean execution of an New Formula Red S2k, Ap2 lip, ZE40, Stoptech Calipers, and an OEM hardtop.

I could do a “yo dog” joke here, but interesting s2k air freshener.

Long Beach Blue NA2 NSX.  Whenever I think of a USDM spec NA2 NSX, I think of this color… There used to be one around my neighborhood growing up, it was probably brand new then.

Some cars definitely made the hike out to the cruise, This particular car came from Utah, while the first NSX came from Arizona.

This yellow NA1 Looekd pretty cool.  It was the most modified NSX in attendance.

I’m loving the OZ superleggeras on this car.  I used to have these rims on my Wife’s GC8…. 2.5 RS yo!

The sky was incredibly clear this day

Personalized license plates were out in full force.

Another shot of the NA1 NSX with some custom LED turn signals.

Since my friend has a Laguna Blue S2k, it was interesting to see the differences of color between the Long Beach Blue and Laguna Blue. Laguna blue seems to be a bit lighter.

An Evo 8 was in attendance. I’ve always wanted an Evo…..

They stopped by Alberto’s Taco Shop…. Alvin didn’t partake, because he had a long drive home…..

These yellow flowers were everywhere. They looked like dandelions.

A closer look at the NA1 Yellow NSX. Some LED tail lights to go with the GT wing.

Comptech/CT Engineering SuperCharger.

Interesting Strut brace, must be a reason it is designed like this.

Group shot!

Alvin’s LGBTQ, I mean LBP Ap2. On some Sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sports……

Final stop was this Pie Shop.

Alvin said the Pie was awesome….

I’ll try to have more posts up before I go back into full study mode….  Shoutout to Murphy for making this all possible!

Life: The day I meet Ichishima San! at Spoon Sports USA

Being in Southern California and being a car enthusiast is awesome! I can’t say that enough, I can see how you can eventually become jaded from the car overload…. I’ve been cutting down on car events to keep things fresh and we just bought a house, so we’ve been busy fixing it up. When I heard Ichishima san, the SPOON Sports CEO was going to be at GoTuning, aka Spoon Sports USA, I knew I couldn’t miss it. I’m not the biggest spoon fan, but I respect their philosophy, a minimal approach to car tuning, just slightly augmenting the factory fundamentals to retain total balance over outright power…..

The event was posted all over social media, Upon arrival at GoTuning, Ichishima was not there yet, but people were still rolling in, like this EK.  I’ve always like the body style of the EK. I remember a few years ago, my dad had an EG, EK, and EF at the same time, all hatchbacks.  He let me choose one for a daily driver, in the end I picked the EG since it was the most raw with a stick shift, hand crank windows, and no moonroof, and the EF was auto 😦

This brought out a lot of Spoon fans.  Like this beautiful Spoon’ed out EG.  He had almost the entire spoon catalogue on his car, but the damn Mishimoto radiator keep bothering me…….I love the blue and black theme.

Beautifully executed.

More cool cars were rolling in, like this Mugen themed EP3 with MF10s…. funny thing about MF10s, KingMotorsports just released a re-run of Mugen MF10 yesterday, everyone and their mother has been trying to sell their used set, probably hoping to buy a brand new in box set.  King lets you buy per wheels so those guys that bought 2 sets of NSX fitment wheels for the rear wheels for over $7k+ definitely got screwed!  I think the group buy is over now……..too rich for my blood.

Hector Lavario’s Voltex themed S2k with quality authentic parts.  I really like the Volk TE37s, beats the NT03s he had before!

Took a closer look at the EP3 running the Mugen kit.  Bronze MF10s on a silver car looks so right.

I like seeing properly modded EP3s, this chassis hasn’t seen too much love over the years compared to the other models.

MF10s with EP3 Type R Calipers.

My S2k…. got all sorts of cracks on my bumper and my hardtop is in horrible shape………Anyone want to sell me a daily?

Beautifully restored EG Civic.  I love color and the red anodizing on the CE28Ns.  I overheard heard the owner talk how almost every piece on the car is new….. like a modern day restomod.

Same ITR I shot at Tech Day awhile back….. He has an instagram too, I can’t remember it off the top of my head right now…….

Some of the GoTuning Featured line up.  Their famous center-drive Super lap battle FD2, full Spoon Ver.2 demo car with prototype Spoon open air concept hardtop, GoTuning Tommy’s ASM s2k, and of course Chris Lum’s famous Mugen Ap2.

Not in the same parking lot in front of GoTuning, I found this BB6 Prelude in the same complex.  The driver’s side door was bashed in.  This car definitely has some goodies though.  JDM full red interior, HID retrofits, JDM fogs, OEM lip kit, and running TL rims!  I used to have a 5th Gen BB6 back in the day.

The Calipers look like they’re off of another model, possibly late gen Accord?

Another angle of the featured GoTuning Lineup.

I know this has been around, but it was my first time seeing this in person. What is insane about the Spoon prototype hardtop is that the entire metal piece is CNC machined out of a single block.

Areen living up the Spoon life.

At this point Ichishima san rolled up in this BMW M5, Areen is hard at work assisting Ichishima San.

Not only does he have a sick Spoon/ASM themed S2k, he’s also really good at carrying stuff.

Ichishima San arrived and got to work.  Here he is signing Hector’s car.

Checking out the Spoon themed EG Civic.

Here is when he shook the steering wheel of the Spoon themed EG civic.  He remarked how loose the steering wheel is!  He mentioned that this is incredibly unsafe.  He went around that entire day shaking everyone’s steering wheel, including mine 🙂

November 19, 2016-IMG_0906Chris’s all Mugen car.  I mentioned the car is all Mugen, and he said,  “he loves all Hondas!”

Checking out the EG civic and showing the owner of pictures of his own personal cars…… Nice Jordan IIIs btw….

People were trying to get everything signed this day.  I saw the most Spoon clusters Brand new in Box I’ve ever seen in my entire life getting signed, it’s crazy how much they go for nowadays…..

Next four pictures are shot by my buddy and talented photographer Nick aka NH512

Pick Ups: Recaro SR-7 ASM IS-11 with Recaro Japan Rail

It’s crazy how things can change over time. If you were to talk to me about my S2k 4-5 years ago, I would have told you, “Race Car Bro.” Now I have come to the conclusion that I’m a shitty driver, and I would like a  well-rounded car. Not only can I play pretend racecar driver, by running track days with 34234340 other people on the field, spinning out, and pretend I’m going fast, but I would also like something that I wouldn’t mind cruising to the meet to school noobs on how not JDM TYTE their car is….. Kidding not Kidding.

These seats are the embodiment of that. Coming from Recaro SPG seats, I figured I should at least make my car more comfortable for people that ride in the passenger side, especially my wife who hated my Recaro SPG seat, and actually hates this seat, but hates this less…. which is the key…..

I’ve been looking for this specific seat for awhile now.  Since my driver’s side is a RECARO RS-G ASM LIMITED IS-11, I wanted a seat that would compliment this on the passenger side.  The Recaro SR-7 ASM IS-11 have been discontinued for awhile now, they have an updated seat out now, the RECARO SR-7F ASM LIMITED IS-11 GK.  It took awhile, but paitence paid off and I found a mint example of this seat.

With the seats. you also need rails.  After extensive extensive research,  I decided on Recaro Japan Rails for the Ap1 S2000, I do not believe they make a seat rails for the 06+ s2000 passenger side.  The Recaro Japan rails are bottom mount rails for Recaro seats, and can be side mounted if you attach the Recaro Side Mount adapters.  Like the name implies, these are Japanese Market Recaro rails, they do not officially sell these in the USA. I initially was going to run Bride RO rails, but after asking around and talking to people that ran Bride RO seat rails on bottom mount Recaros such as SR6 or SR7, the conclusion is that the seats sit too high on Bride rails, higher than stock!  I picked these up used from Yahoo auctions with my seat.

The Recaro Japan Seat Rail bolted onto my seat PERFECTLY.  You can tell Recaro did their research for the S2000, since on the passenger side, the adjustment lever is short and bent on the right-hand side to accommodate the hump in the floor pan.

The Rail fit perfectly, even the adjustment is OEM like.  I’m pretty sure Recaro makes the OEM seat rails.  I know they make the OEM S2000 seats.

This seat was made in 2014 🙂

I like to give a detailed review of these products, because when I did research, I found out that there is very little information out there on this setup.  Finding out the correct rail to buy was half guess work, half logic.  I was looking for specific bottom mount Recaro rails, but I saw there are only two types Recaro Japan rails out there, and the other one is the Ultra Low edition that is side mount only. This is the clearance between my center tunnel and the side Bolster.  The clearance is just millimeters, it touches, but it doesn’t push up against the center tunnel hard.

Between the door panel and the seat.

The side bolster and the door panel. Plenty of clearance.

Door side Bolster, taken with my DSLR.

Side bolster to center tunnel again. I know I gotta upgrade that carpet center console cover, it looks really bad…..

I love how the Red stitching matches with my Red/Black theme I have going on in my car.  I actually think that the Recaro SR7 is the same seat as the Mugen CRZ seats, the Mugen MS-Z….. I could be wrong

Full money shot of the seat next to my driver’s side seat.  I want to replace the center console cover and armrest to really clean things up.  Oh yeah, I sold my rollbar and put my interior back in…… things are coming to change that soon.  If there is any knock on this seat, I do feel like the head rest area is too hard, not soft and bouncy like my RS-G.

Life: Another 626 June night

It’s getting hot in the 626… with the SoCal summer heat comes more summer meets….. I kicked it with a few friends this past week……

Maintenance Log 1: Cabin Air Filter and Vtec Solenoid Gaskets

I’m starting a new segment, I’m going to use these maintenance logs to keep track of my maintenance.

It’s a reality, my S2k is over 15 years old if you can believe that…. and with that age comes great maintenance.

vtecsolenoidgasket

When I changed out my Cam gears, noticed this oil leak on my timing cover…..This is what prompted me to take a closer look at my o-rings. I know my O-rings on my Timing Chain Tensioner are good since I replaced that not too long ago

This is what prompted me to take a closer look at my o-rings. I know my O-rings on my Timing Chain Tensioner are good since I replaced that not too long ago.

vtecsolenoidgasket-4

I figured the gaskets on my Vtec solenoid needed to be changed since they are on the hot side of the engine near the exhaust manifold, the heat tends to accelerate rubber wear.  Removing the VTEC solenoid is only 3 10mm bolts…..

s-l1000

I ordered this OEM Honda VTEC solenoid gasket from this eBayer seller in the picture.

vtecsolenoidgasket-2

As you can see my VTEC solenoid gasket was brittle and flat……

vtecsolenoidgasket-3

Since I was replacing the main gasket on the VTEC solenoid, I went ahead and replaced the Upper VTEC solenoid gasket too.  However, Honda does not sell this piece separately. Before you would have to buy a whole new VTEC solenoid just to get this gasket, but now they are some sellers that sell this gasket alone. I also bought this one off of eBay….. This gasket alone was almost $30 😦 I think I only paid around $10 for the lower VTEC gasket…. There is a definitely market for this since a complete new VTEC Solenoid is around $200+

vtecsolenoidgasket-6

The old brittle gasket on the left and the new gasket on the Upper VTEC Solenoid.

vtecsolenoidgasket-5

Another shot of it on the Upper VTEC Solenoid

Next item of maintenance, replacing the Air Cabin Filter. I’ve been wanting to replace this unit for awhile now, but it keeps slipping my mind. I was on amazon and I figured why not, it’s only $10.45 with free amazon prime shipping. Typically I buy OEM HONDA for everything, but the ease and time savings of amazon prime, it was too hard to pass up. Worst case scenario I could always run it for a bit and then buy an OEM unit in the future…..

CabinAirFilter

TYC Air Cabin filter comes with detailed instructions with pictures.

CabinAirFilter-2

Cabin Filter is located under the dash cowel on the passenger side. Typically there is a weather strip on the dash cowel, but it is not there because of the body shop that worked on my car never replaced it after they worked on my car…..just another thing they fucked up on…. please see my thoughts here and here about this body shop….

Check out my new Odyssey PC680 battery I got free from my friend! Just in the nick of time too, I had to give up my Optima Yellow top to my IS300 since that car’s battery died.

CabinAirFilter-6

As you can see, my old battery tie down was all rusted so I bought another amazon special…..a billet battery tie down…. It was only $10 and of course free amazon prime shipping…. I promise you won’t be seeing any more amazon parts on this car!

CabinAirFilter-3

The Cabin Filter lies in here.  The filter element is encased in a plastic enclosure.  All that is replaced is the paper element inside the enclosure.

CabinAirFilter-4

This is what came out of the car…. I believe this is the original Cabin Filter. My car is an 2001 model year so about 15 years of dust is built up on this. This car has also been to more than 8 states coast to coast

CabinAirFilter-5

I swapped in the cabin air filter into the plastic enclosure…..

OEM or not, anything is better than what I had before. The part fit in perfectly, I have no complaints, now I can breathe in fresher air!

Life: A Random AE86 appears

I hung out with some friends last week. What I like about hanging out with like-minded car enthusiasts is that they are associated or attract other people that share the similar vision and philosophy when it comes to tuning cars….

Speaking of tuning, Tom picked up a new Intake…. TOP FUEL ZERO-1000 TYPE 3D. I like how the inlet of the intake goes over the radiator. I think there are only a handful of people in the USA with this particular setup.  Loving those Öhlins Tom, we all know the fastest S2ks in California run Öhlins….. 🙂

You can see Colin to the left installing his KCMachine Shorai Battery kit It is USA made and only a combined weight of 6.6lbs! KCMachine makes Shorai battery kits for other cars like the BRZ, FRS, and NSX.

Areen brought his buddy out with one of the cleanest Hachi Rokus I’ve seen outside of a car meet……..

Kouki frontend with a zenki lip.

Of course I asked the owner what he was running under the hood….
Under the bonnet is a 20v 4age with the stock ITBs!  I like how the engine bay is painted, reminds me of how Spoon paints the interior and engine bay of their cars.
I believe he said the bottom end was all Tomei….

I love the accordion shift boot and matching Personal horn to match the seats.

I like this shot, the car behind turned on his headlights as he was leaving…….This reminds me of the option videos I used to watch back in the day when they ran the touge in my younger years.

Trueno mud flaps.
I’m happy that owners like this are preserving this car as they are becoming increasingly rare and modifying the car with quality parts that don’t take away from the soul and balance of the vehicle.

Meet Life / Pickups: ASM bolts

I recently picked up some ASM bolts thanks to my friend Chris that brought them all the way from ASM in Japan.

I took this picture during my visit to ASM I didn’t pick the bolts up when I visited for whatever reason. When I found out Chris was going to Japan, I jumped at the opportunity to get the ASM bolts to complete my cooling plate setup.

Thanks Chris for the bolts!

Life: Petersen Ferrari Breakfast Cruise in

Checked out a cool Ferrari Meet last month at the Petersen Museum in LA, the event was for Enzo Ferrari’s birthday. I’m not really a “Ferrari guy”, but I do appreciate the mark. It’s always weird going to an event for a car you don’t own, like myself going to an NSX meet….Meet starts early as fuck, like seriously early, doors open at 8, I think I woke up around 6:40 to start getting ready to wake up at 7am.  It’s at events like this I feel so insignificant as an S2000 driver…only pushes me to work on it more!

Petersen Ferrari Breakfast Cruise in
Of course being a Ferrari event you can expect to see RED, lots of RED, with some yellow and black thrown into the mix.

It did seem like a majority of the Ferraris were 360s and 430s, perhaps they are dropping in price and are more attainable.

I was super excited to see a Ferrari F40 in person. It’s my favorite Ferrari, it has everything I love about Ferrari, the racing hertiage, spartan interior, use of carbon fiber, Twin Turbos, beautiful 80s body lines…….fucking awesome. This must of seemed like a rocketship if you compare it the other cars at the time..

Lotus Esprit in the non F car parking, this particular car was on a petrolicious video

The color is so unique, it’s like a powder baby blue.  It’s hard to find such pristine examples of this car

Also in the non F  car parking was this new gen Nissan GTR .

and down the row from that Nissan GTR was this Acura NSX

I like the Prodrive rims, don’t see to many of these on NSXs

the purple color really set this GTR off, it also makes it really seem like a pig compared to the sleek and slim NSX.

There was this beautiful example of an E28 BMW M5

Nice to look at a beefy metal radiator compared to the plastic ones that come stock in our Japanese cars.

Carbon Fiber wheel well

V12! interesting how the headers are so high up, almost hanging off of the valve covers

Insane how each louvre is carbon fiber.

This is another car I was lusting after.  I’ve always loved the lines of this car, and the Scuderia version of this takes it to the next level.

Carbon Fiber everywhere, makes getting a Mugen intake seem like nothing……

More Carbon fiber in the interior…..

Sweet looking Dino

One of these do not belong…….

Close up on the fender louvres on the 458 Speciale

Seeing red everywhere

It was refreshing seeing this yellow F355 compared to all the red cars

Of course everyone was out in their best Ferrari gear

I wonder if most of these guys even owned a Ferrari

Ferrari probably makes more money from their clothing line than their actual cars

Ferrari Starter pack, Ferrari shirt, shiny watch, and some colorful loafers…..

Ferrai 360 Challenge Stradale

Ferrari 512 Testarossa leaving the event…..

Hope everyone enjoyed the coverage. Although I’m more of a Japanese car enthusiast personally, it’s nice seeing different cars. SoCal is a crazy place, this was only ONE of the many ferrari events going on that weekend. Most places in the country they are lucky just to have one…. More Japanese car/s2000 content coming soon! thanks for looking
